History
Snell Motorsports began in 1974 when brothers Joe and
Jimmy Snell formed “J & J Racing”
to race karts at the Hughesville (PA) Kart Club.
In 1979, after 40 feature wins and 4 track
championships, Joe moved on to begin his stock
car racing career. Teaming up with Wayne Lent,
the pair built racecars to compete in the
“Sport Stock” class at Shangri La Speedway
in Owego, NY.
After two and a half years of dismal on-track
performances and lack of financial backing, Joe
sold out his racing operation to Ed McGuire of
McGuire Motorsports. In 1994, Joe and Wayne
again teamed up to produce a highly competitive
Street Stock to be raced at Tioga Speedway
(formerly Shangri La Speedway). After 5 years,
several feature wins and top five Championship
runs, the Street Stock was sold to Eugene Beers
of Wysox, PA.
Joe then purchased a 1996 Troyer Modified from
Chuck Winslow of Elmira, NY in anticipation of
the reopening of the Chemung Speedrome in
Chemung, NY. Joe ran the car as a modified at
Tioga Speedway while the Chemung track was being
finished. Over the winter 2000-2001 the car was
converted to an “SST” or “B” modified
and campaigned at Chemung. The car participated
full time from 2001 to 2003 when it was parked
to allow Joe more time to focus on Jake &
Dusty’s racing development. The car is race
ready and rumor has it that it will return to
competition in the near future. |
